Description:
Matting and Framing teaches the materials and techniques of conservation-quality framing. For display, matting and framing provides both protective and aesthetic contributions to art on paper. Students will learn about different types of enclosures, different mat styles and cutting methods, the pros and cons of different backing boards and glazing, and different methods of attaching items to a mat, some of which do not involve adhering hinges to art on paper. Lectures, illustrations, product resources, and additional informational references will be provided.

  2. Principals of Matting and Framing/Aesthetic and Protective Nature of Framing
  3. Materials and Techniques (boards, glazing, hinging)
  4. Mat Styles and Mat Cutting
  5. Unique Objects and issues (Specialty Supports, Safety) Security Hardware
  6. Conclusion

Logistics:
Participants in the Matting and Framing course work through sections on their own. Instructor Susan Duhl is available for scheduled email support. Materials and resources include online literature, slide lectures, dialog between students and online chats led by the instructor. The course is limited to 20 participants.

The Instructor:
Susan Duhl is an Art Conservator in private practice specializing in art on paper and archival collections. She provides workshops, preservation consultations and conservation treatment to institutions and private individuals throughout the world. Susan treats works on paper, including prints, watercolors, drawings, wallpaper, documents, and 3-dimensional paper objects. Her work includes disaster response and recovery, consultations and collection surveys to determine condition, treatment and long-term care recommendations, and helping clients prioritize treatment needs. Her recent clients include the Library of Congress, the National Archives and Records Administration, The Woodmere Art Museum, and LaSalle and Lehigh University Art Museums. Susan completed her Master of Art degree and Certificate of Advanced Study in Art Conservation from the State University College at Buffalo Art Conservation Program. She is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic & Artistic Works (AIC) and founding member of the Art Conservator Alliance, www.ArtConservatorsAlliance.com
