Interactive video networks bring training sessions closer to home

The Basic Collections Care Workshop Series is an exciting new training project that the Association of South Dakota Museums and Northern States Conservation Center are working on together with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Using interactive video networks, each training session will be presented simultaneously to one Minnesota and four South Dakota locations. The class sites are: St. Paul, MN; Aberdeen, Pierre, Sioux Falls and Spearfish, SD. Using computer adjusted video cameras, participants and the instructor can talk to each other while physically separate. This training technique, common in university systems, is being used for the first time in South Dakota to provide close to home training to small museum staff.

The series covers:
1. General Principles of Collections Care (Jan. 29, 1997, 10:30a.m.-1:30p.m)
2. Storage for Infinity (June 1998)
3. Exhibiting without Damaging (Sept. 1998)
4. Fund-raising for Collections Care (Jan. 1999)
5. Student Solutions at their Institutions (April 1999)

Each session will include handouts, sample materials and homework assignments. Cost per session is $20 for ASDM members, $30 for non-members.
